Daniel Kahneman - one of his most famous dictums was "Nothing is as important as you think it is, while you are thinking about it". In other words, what determines our sense of importance is often our attention. And our attention, although not beyond our control, is often quite arbitrary. As a consequence, what garners people's attention is what they then deem to be important. They talk about it more which then spreads the degree of attention it gets get elsewhere.

We don’t need a virtual reality — we have a reality.
We don’t need innovation, we need compassion.
We don’t need to fix the problems of the world with technology, we need to fix technology with our human spirit.

13.10.24 Chris Dancy being quoted by Matt Klein in an episode of Zine sent to me by my dear friend Jordi.

All of you may work for companies. You may all believe in the bots and technology that is going to change and improve the profit and success and the throughput of all the other things you want, but you're also children and parents and lovers and you swim in the human ocean and that's more important to you than anything else you do and you, therefore, think of the future and what the future will be. And so far this technology that was so exciting in the 70s 80 90s has like the rivers of England it has become contaminated. Plouted. It's very difficult for children to swim in the culture or breathe the air of our culture. Just as it is literally, physically, to breathe the air because of the particulates, and swim in the river because of the raw sewage, and it's the same now in our culture!
If AI technology is to be of any use to us at all, it is to be in part for its uses in purifying and helping in solving these problems we have created.

Always the thing that holds small communities together: honour and shame.

10.10.24 Brian Eno in conversation with Stephen Fry, at Intercom’s Pioneer conference.

He had some fascinating views about things and laid the foundations for much of what was to come - but, he didn't have what has been provided since the 80s really, since the first things like the well, and the commercial online services, CompuServe, AmericaOnline appeared — there was this thing that was missing from the world, and however clever AI is now, and however the brilliant the science of the people who just got their noble prize like Jeffry Hinton back propagation, the building of these large language models, and artificial neural networks and spite neural networks — all the mathematics and all the cleverness behind it is meaningless. You can take machines and put them in the 1970s and they wouldn't work. Because they would have no fuel — because there was no data there.

There was no digital data in the world.

Strategy is a philosophy of becoming.

1.10.24 Seth Godin when referring to his new book — This is Strategy — in this episode of his Akimbo podcast.

From Software as a Service — to Service as Software.

10.10.24 My professional mentor (unbeknownst to him, ish), Des Traynor, referring to the transformation of Software as a result of the irreversible onslaught of AI, during his EPIC talk at Intercom’s Pioneer conference.
